I just published my first book!

Every writer has a story to tell, and for me, it was one deeply rooted in Finland’s gambling culture and history. Writing Rahapelien historia Suomessa – Miksi suomalaiset pelaavat (Finnish Edition) was a journey that combined my professional expertise and personal curiosity about why gambling has become such an integral part of Finnish culture.

The idea to write this book came after more than a decade of working in the international gambling industry. Over the years, I realized that while there was plenty of global literature on gambling, Finland’s unique history and approach to it remained underexplored. I wanted to shed light on the traditions, institutions, and societal factors that make gambling in Finland so distinctive.

Exploring Finland’s Gambling Roots

Finland has a fascinating relationship with gambling. From the early days of lotteries to the widespread popularity of slot machines and online casinos, gambling has evolved alongside our society. This book dives deep into the cultural and historical factors that shaped this industry. Major institutions like Veikkaus and Raha-automaattiyhdistys (RAY) have played pivotal roles, not only as gambling operators but as contributors to public services and charitable causes.

Writing about these topics felt like uncovering a hidden layer of Finnish culture. Gambling here is not just entertainment—it’s tied to community well-being, regulation, and national identity. I felt compelled to explore not only the successes of this system but also its challenges, including the increasing concerns over problem gambling.

Why Now?

As Finland gears up for a new licensing system by 2026–2027, I saw this as the perfect time to look back on where we started and where we might be headed. Transitioning to a more open gambling market will undoubtedly bring changes, and I wanted to provide readers with a comprehensive foundation to understand what those changes mean for players, operators, and the Finnish economy.

Balancing Expertise and Accessibility

One of the biggest challenges in writing this book was making it accessible to everyone. Whether you’re a researcher, an industry professional, or simply curious about Finnish culture, I wanted the book to speak to you. My aim was to present a balanced view—celebrating the unique aspects of Finland’s gambling history while critically examining its impact on society.

A Rewarding Journey

Writing Rahapelien historia Suomessa has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. It allowed me to connect my professional background with my passion for storytelling and culture. The positive reception has been humbling, and it encourages me to continue exploring and sharing insights into the industries and traditions that shape us.

If you’re curious about the book or Finland’s unique gambling history, I invite you to check it out on Amazon. It’s a journey through time, culture, and the ever-changing world of games—and I hope it inspires thought and understanding, just as writing it has inspired me.
